San Juan, La Union is quickly becoming a better alternative option from other surfing spots in the country like Baler and Siargao. But with the town’s laid back vibe and good waves all year round, not to mention its vicinity from the capital (it’s just about five hours drive from Manila), it’s no wonder that many are already eyeing San Juan as the preferred destination for a quick weekend getaway.

Now visitors have many hotels, hostels and backpacker inns to choose from in the stretch of beach where tourists mostly congregate. But since San Juan is now becoming more popular, lodgings are often fully booked in this area specially during peak season.

Last weekend, me and my companions visited San Juan and its surrounding areas to discover its newest offerings. The initial plan was to stay in a backpacker type of accommodation which was actually nearer downtown. But I was glad that we got to stay in Final Option Beach Resort. It turned out to be a good last minute option (pun intended) for us!

My group stayed in a room fit for up to seven individuals. Our room had two queen beds and a double deck at the far corner. There was only one bathroom but it was big enough to move around comfortably. The room also comes with complimentary bottled water and coffee and tea. Towels and toiletries were also provided free of charge.

Our first day was spent at the property. While Final Option Beach Resort is not located in the main tourist area, guests have the luxury of communing with the dancing waves as the hotel sits right at the beach. For the adventurous guests, they can also choose to book surfing lessons at the hotel while families with little kids can swim and lounge at the hotel’s pretty swimming area. People-watching and walking along the beach at sunset are activities that shouldn’t be missed!

It was also nice that the hotel has its own restaurant so we didn’t have to wander far every time we go hungry. It is a German Bistro actually where beers and delicious cold cuts are served. The restaurant also offers a variety of dishes including German, Continental, American and Filipino fare. It’s not surprising as the family patriarch, Peter, is from Germany. P & M stands for Peter & Mercy (the owners). Like me, you may be curious as to why the hotel was named Final Option Beach Resort. I suggest ask the people working here or the owners when you happen to see them during your stay. I bet you will find it rather unique and amusing. 🙂

Beer lovers will have a grand time here too. They serve German draft beer! My friends who drink say that it’s one of the best tasting beer they had.

On Sundays, the hotel offers international buffet breakfast between 7:00 AM and 10:30 AM. Breakfast is a very relaxing affair since the restaurant overlooks the beach (read: fresh air). The staff are all well-trained and courteous. They never fail to give a smile or a greeting to guests.

While the resort is small, it’s big in facilities and services. The hotel has the offerings of a big hotel chain but has the homey vibe a tired vacationer is looking for.
