I actually prefer staying in guesthouses or smaller hotels in my travels. First, it is cheaper and second, the location is normally better than other hotels.
My friend and I stayed in UB Guesthouse during our time in the Capital. It is housed in an older but well-maintained structure and is very near Ulaanbaatar’s main sights. You can reach Sukhbaatar Square within 3 minutes from the property.
We booked a twin room with shared bathroom priced at USD 22 per night. Dorm rooms were cheaper at USD 8. However, we opted to book the former. It was spacious enough for both of us and our room has views of the city.

UB Guesthouse and I bet other hostels in the area too, enforces tight security. Once checked in, Bobby, our kind host and the hostel manager, gave us a map and briefed us what to expect when go about our wanderings. We were also given our own key pass for the entrance door. Entering the key code isn’t a sure way to enter the guesthouse. Someone from the inside still needs to validate our request to enter.
Here are some photos of the guesthouse I took with my mobile phone. It was off peak so there were not much guests around. Or perhaps most of them were already on tours when we arrived. If I were to visit Ulaanbaatar again, I’d stay here once more. It felt homey enough that I thought I was gonna cry when Bobby sent us off. lol!
It made our stay definitely one for the books, 🙂
UB Guesthouse also offers tours. We booked our 3D/2N Terelj trip with them. You can find more details about accommodation and tours here.
